Tournament Talk

Lots of tournament types are played at Worlds. Here’s how they work.

  • Double Elimination: The loser of a match gets another chance to win by moving into the Loser’s Bracket. Most Tournament Brackets at Worlds are Double Elimination.
  • Pool Play: When there are many players in a Division, pool play is used to place players into the different Tier Brackets, based on their performance in the Pool Play bracket.
  • Mini Pool Play: Used at Worlds, these are small pool play brackets that are used to advance top finishers to the Champion Bracket, or advance next finishers to the Tier Pool Play Brackets. An example of this is the RPI (Ranked Players Invitational).
  • RPI (Ranked Players Invitational): A mini pool play bracket type to advance Singles players to either the Singles Championship Bracket, or the Singles Tier 2 – Tier 4 Championship Brackets.
  • Tier Brackets: These are the final brackets in a Division, called Main Tier, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Only players in the Main Tier can advance on to the Division Championships (for example, Singles or Doubles). There is a final Champion, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place for each Tier.

ACO WORLDS 18 HOST CITY

Owensboro, Kentucky

Owensboro is Kentucky’s fourth-largest city, nestled on a scenic bend of the Ohio River in western Kentucky.

Sports: Centrally located among numerous midwestern cities, Owensboro’s hospitality, attractions, world-class convention center and extraordinary riverfront make it a winning choice for the ACO World Championships of Cornhole. Owensboro was designated as the Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Sportstown for the state of Kentucky for its sports and recreation options.

Food: Owensboro is the food hub of western Kentucky, with a wide variety of wonderfully delicious, locally owned restaurants. No trip to Owensboro is complete without enjoying Owensboro’s signature hickory-smoked barbecue mutton and flavorful burgoo, sampling some of Kentucky’s finest bourbons, and exploring our ties to the roots of bluegrass music.

Music: As the Bluegrass Capital of the world, Owensboro is home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where it all began. Music lovers enjoy several free entertainment options throughout the summer. Most weeks from May through September bring free live music to downtown Owensboro on a variety of riverfront stages. Every Thursday is “Downtown Date Night” in downtown Owensboro with live music from 6-10 p.m. The “Friday After 5” free concert series offers live music on multiple outdoor stages along the riverfront from 5-10 p.m. And on Saturday nights from 7-9 p.m. “Live on the Banks” brings more free live music to the Smothers Park Overlook.

THE ROAD TO WORLDS

FIND OUT WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME WORLD CHAMPION

Here’s how to become ACO World Champion in the Singles Division (King or Queen of Cornhole)

  1. Become an ACO Member and start playing.
  2. To make it to Worlds, you have to first qualify. Qualified Singles are accepted into the Singles Division at Worlds. To qualify, a registered ACO member must have 30 points from either an ACO Regional or ACO Major or combination of both in each division they would like to participate in at Worlds. Or, finish the Season in the “Corny 40” (the Top 40 ranked Singles Players of the Season). Qualified players enter the “RPI” qualifiers at Worlds (Ranked Players Invitational).
  3. Advance through  “Pool Play” Mini Brackets in Double Elimination tournaments. Qualified players advance to Worlds Singles Brackets.
  4. Advance through the Singles Main Bracket in Double Elimination tournaments. Qualified players advance to the Worlds Singles Championship.
  5. Championship Night crowns the ACO World Singles Champion as the King or Queen of Cornhole!

“This Season, I was both Player of the Season and World Champion in Womens, I made Pro, and was the only woman in the Corny 40 (top 40). I love the family atmosphere at ACO. People are so happy to see friends that they haven’t seen for months whether they’re players or not.”

– Paula Stevens
ACO Womens World Champion, Season 14, Las Vegas, NV
